Use the Loom page
A Loom is a tree of continuations. Each Node holds text, and each Branch under a Node grows new Nodes that continue the text of their path. The App's Loom page grows Looms in the browser. To grow one from a script, read Make a Loom.
Open or start a Loom
Loom opens the Loom that you changed last. Your Looms lists your Looms, up to 100: the pinned ones first, then the others by their last change. Select Your Looms to fold the list away, and again to open it. The next Loom page shows the list as you left it. To start a new Loom:
- Select New Loom.
- Write the Prompt. In an empty prompt box, Tab puts in the gray example.
- Select Start the Loom. The prompt becomes the first Node, the root.
A new Loom is Untitled Loom until its first Branch names it after the first line of its root, up to 40 characters. To rename a Loom, select its title. To manage it in other ways, use the buttons by its title. The menu on the Loom's row in Your Looms has Pin, Rename, and Delete too, so you can change a Loom without opening it:
- The title and Rename open Rename this Loom. Enter a Title and select Save. An empty title leaves the Loom untitled, so its next Branch names it.
- Pin keeps the Loom at the top of Your Looms. Unpin takes it off.
- Delete Loom deletes the Loom, with its prompt and every Node, after you confirm. You cannot undo it.
Branch under a Node
- Select a Node in the tree. Text shows the text of its path: the earlier Nodes in gray, then the Node, with its heatmap.
- In the settings, choose the model, Branches (how many Nodes the Branch grows, from 1 to 8), and how each Node is sampled.
- Select Branch. Each new Node shows its text as it arrives, also after a reload.
- To stop every Node of the Loom that grows, select Stop. Each keeps the text that it grew.
A Loom opens with the settings of its last Branch, with Seed blank. A blank Seed gives each Branch a new random seed: its first Node gets the seed, the next the seed + 1, and so on. When the last Branch asked for no log probabilities, Top logprobs shown starts at 5, for the heatmap.
As in the Playground, a Branch of a model that is not Warm waits while the model starts. One line under the title says how far the start has got and about how long is left.
Branch works under a Node that completed or that you stopped. A Node that failed shows why, under the text that it had. Select a token in Text to see the likeliest tokens at that place. The heatmap marks a line break with ⏎ and a tab with ⇥, and a copy of the text leaves the marks out.
Each Node holds its own tokens while it grows (Holds of background work).
Read the tree as a graph
Tree and Graph switch the view of the Nodes, and the next Loom page opens in the same view. Graph shows each Node as a dot with its first words, and each Branch as a line from its parent. Scroll to pan, and use Zoom in, Zoom out, and Fit. Hover over a Node for its whole first line, and select it to read it.
Change the tree
Each change acts on the Node that you read. The note next to the buttons says why a change has to wait, for example while a Branch grows under the Node.
- Edit opens Edit this Node. Change the Text and select Save. The Node loses its heatmap, and the Nodes under it keep their own text.
- To split a Node in two, select Edit, put the cursor inside the text where the new child starts, and select Split at the cursor. A split at the start or the end would leave a Node empty, so the dialog asks you to move the cursor.
- Sibling opens Write a sibling. Write its Text and select Add sibling.
- On the root, New root opens Write a new root. Replace the tree replaces the whole tree, and every Node of the Loom goes.
- Delete Node deletes the Node and the Nodes under it, after you confirm. You then read its parent.
Use the keyboard
These keys act on the Node that you read, when the focus is not in a text box or a dialog:
| Key | What it does |
|---|---|
g | Grow a Branch under the Node |
e | Edit the Node |
s | Split the Node, with Split at the cursor in the edit dialog |
i | Write a sibling of the Node |
Delete | Delete the Node and the Nodes under it |
↑ ↓ ← →, Home, End | Move in the tree |
Esc | Close a dialog |
? | Show these keys |
Keys, at the end of the Node's buttons, also shows these keys. A key does nothing while its button is off. The root has no i and no Delete.
Export and import
- To copy the text of the path to the Node that you read, select Copy text. To download it as
loom-path.txt, select Path as text. - To download the whole Loom as a Loom file,
loom-<id>.json, select Export. - To make a Loom from a Loom file, select New Loom. Under Import a Loom, choose the Loom file, and select Import.
An import makes a new Loom with new Node ids, and opens it. Its title is the file's title with (imported) after it, so you can tell it from the Loom that it came from. The App imports files that Export wrote, and Loom files from the old platform. For a file that is not a Loom file, the App says what is wrong with it.
When the browser does not let the App copy, the App shows the text selected. Copy it by hand.
